6th Annual Growing Texas Workshop

Urban Forestry Innovations

Best Approaches for Urban Wood Conservation

One challenge to a sustainable urban forest is planting, preserving, and re-purposing our city trees. We have all seen poorly planted trees, trees removed during construction for seemingly no good reason, and high quality wood sent to the landfill. We will have two workshops this year that will address these three topics.

Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Paul Ries, who will discuss how to foster innovation in an urban forestry program through creativity, leadership, and strategic thinking. He will be joined by other speakers providing additional perspectives on this topic.

The University of Texas at Austin has been a champion for transplanting mature trees on capital projects in the 21st century. The Landscape Services has played an integral role in this process by helping select these trees, assessing their health, and recommending transplant locations.  The UT Landscape Services implements custom standards & specifications to properly deal with preservation, mitigation, planting, and even repurposing of these trees.  They  will present on these topics and provide a tour of the SITES Gold-Certified Dell Medical School Campus during the Growing Texas Workshop.

Parking: UT Trinity Garage is $18/day, carpooling encouraged. Or make your own arrangements.
